Hot Link Between Business and Politics

We've all heard the warnings: Never discuss religion or politics. That may be well and good for keeping the peace at the family Thanksgiving dinner, but it may be unwise in business. There is a direct link between what happens in the political, governmental arena and how we are affected in business.
The current news includes the Health Care Reform Bill, a new round of stimulus measures, and the financial institutions overhaul law, just to name a few. Do we need to be aware of these and their effect on small business? As we say in Minnesota, “You betcha.”
Small business owners cannot ignore politics. It is in our best interest to be sure our government is healthy. It is important to work within the system – even if “your” party isn't in power. A biblical quote comes to mind: “Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” (Jeremiah 29:7)
Our businesses and the economy are integrally tied together. To the extent that the government prospers, so do we. And to the extent that we prosper, so does our society.
Here are some practical thoughts to give you a start:
Interact with government representatives often. Be proactive and invite them to visit your plant or store. They'll say, “yes,” because it is both a photo op for them as well as a chance to get good, first-hand information. You will benefit in more than one way, too, because it is a PR opportunity for you, as well as the chance to build relationships in which you become the source of that good, first-hand information.
Give serious thought to how and if your business will support candidates or causes. Here in Minnesota Target stores found themselves in a PR embarrassment because of their choices in spending perfectly legal dollars on causes. Rather, think about supporting the system, such as donating to the League of Women Voters or underwriting a candidate-neutral “get-out-the-vote” campaign.
Sponsor issues debates in which the focus is clearly on the outcomes for the business community. Be even-handed in inviting speakers or panelists. Include government representatives from opposing parties and keep them focused upon the issues' effect on the business climate, not on their ideological differences.
Model healthy discussion in your workplace. Again, keep the focus on the issues, not the personalities. Avoid character assassination. Dissing “the other guy” can come back to bite you in numerous ways among employees, vendors, and customers.
Resolve today to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Take your responsibilities as business people and citizens seriously. As more and more of us do so, we will see changes in our politico-business climate.
