I’ve spent a little time lately rereading a great book – The E-Myth Revisited, by Michael Gerber. It’s an “easy read” and is one of a series of books Gerber has written on the subject of what it truly means to be an entrepreneur (the “E” in the title). His basic theme is that most people who start their own businesses are technicians who have an entrepreneurial seizure. Inevitably, the business owns the technician and it eventually fails or at least stagnates, leaving the owner, the employees, the customers and all others involved unsatisfied.
An entrepreneur sees the business as an entity in and of itself – a vehicle designed to delight a group of customers in a way that no other like-business will. “The Entrepreneurial Model looks at a business as if it were a product, sitting on a shelf and competing for the customer’s attention against a whole shelf of competing products (or businesses).
“Said another way, the Entrepreneurial Model has less to do with what’s being done in a business and more to do with how it’s done. The commodity isn’t what’s important – the way it’s delivered is.”
The reason this is so important to me right now is that so many of my clients are overwhelmed, worried, stressed about finances or people or market share, and just plain not having very much fun. Gerber’s book is for you. The whole process of redesigning your whole business model from the ground up is described in the book. No, it’s not a step-by-step book, but it is one that will reinvigorate and shake you out of your comfort zone – or for many of you, your discomfort zone.
Put down this newsletter and get the book. Read it and then let’s talk.
