What You See is What You Get

Bob Ryan, About Purpose, Inc. ©2005

I have had frequent opportunities this last couple of years to study and work with the relationship of visualizing goals and attaining them. “What you see is what you get;” The Power of Positive Thinking; Start with the End In Mind; Name it and Claim it; and many more catch phrases come to mind, but this isn’t a fad. This isn’t a quick fix. This isn’t a New Age mantra.

Clearly articulating and visualizing the end results is a powerful tool in the business person’s toolkit. Spend a few minutes with me looking at what this real-life truth is and how it works.

Practitioners, philosophers, religious leaders and authors over the centuries have encouraged people to harness the powers of our minds – our imaginations – to further physical goals. While there is a great deal of detail to this way of thinking, let me summarize it this way. Virtually everyone agrees that a human is made up of body and soul. (Most also acknowledge a third part – the spirit.)1 The body is our physical being. The soul is comprised of our emotions and intellect. There is a great deal of evidence that proves our emotions and intellect have a powerful effect on our physical being. For example, in many studies, patients that visualize themselves healed and who affirm their belief through their speech, are restored, while those who feel as if there is no hope most often succumb.

1Those of us who experience the spiritual dimension as part of our human make-up believe in forces beyond our own body and soul. We believe there are powers at work that are infinitely more powerful than our minds and emotions that come into play, and which help explain the phenomena described above. My personal understanding is from a Christian perspective and I would be happy to discuss this with you, personally.

How can we apply this?

First, form an image of (imagine) your desired outcome. The more specific, the better.

Second, articulate that image in words as if it were a “done deal.”

Third, make your every action line up with the reality of that vision.

Fourth, hang on. Be patient and persistent.

Actively avoid any word or action that is inconsistent with your imagined outcome. If you see yourself as the most effective salesperson in your industry, sought after by your customers, and eminently knowledgeable about your service or product, then you must act that way at all times. Never allow yourself to say, “I’ll never reach my quota this month,” or “That customer won’t believe anything I say.” You will almost certainly guarantee your own failure.

Imagine riding a bike on which you had no control of the front wheel! You could pedal as hard as you want but you couldn't get where you want to go.

Strategic Business Leadership® or SBL® is designed especially for you, as an owner of a small to medium size business, to gain and maintain control of your company. The front wheel represents your personal vision - what you want to accomplish in your life, through your business.

The rear wheel represents the power of your business to accomplish your vision. While it is a powerful tool, it was designed with the busy entrepreneur in mind. For most of us, lengthy, sophisticated strategic planning is just not practical. SBL® makes it easy for us to lay out clear goals and measurable actions to attain success.

Add to that the discipline and accountability of a TAB Board and you have a sure recipe for excellence.

Hypocrisy or Accuracy? Many people have a great deal of trouble with this

concept and feel that they are hypocrites if they speak words that are not currently borne out in fact. But this is where an understanding of the dual nature of humans is essential. While your body may not see the results you have imagined, they are absolutely true, real-time, in your soul. Most financially successful people will testify that you will only be successful if you think successful. Healing starts in the mind. Accomplished athletes believe beyond any shadow that they are capable (present tense) of the feat before them. And they hold onto that in spite of the evidence of numerous “failures.”

Practical Steps: Let me suggest you take one of the following steps.

  1. If you’re a confident, self-starter who “gets” what I’ve said, get going. Just do it.
  2. If you believe in these concepts and would like some help applying them, let me suggest

Strategic Business Leadership®, a coach-assisted process specifically designed for owners or presidents of small businesses. This is the best tool I have seen to tie together the power of a personal vision with the practical goals, strategies and actions in a business. Call me, or any SBL® coach to get started. I am investing a great deal of my own money and time in bringing this concept to my clients because I believe it is vitally important to their success. I eagerly look forward to their reports that, “What you see is what you get.
