The Right People for Your Team

In these tight times it is absolutely crucial that we surround ourselves with the right mix of talented, dedicated employees to get the job done. What does that team look like? How do we assemble that group of people that are going to consistently perform at a high level?
There are four elements that I find essential to putting the right team together.
Hire people filled with zeal. That’s a word we don’t hear much anymore, but maybe we ought to get more acquainted with it. People with zeal are passionate about their work. They can get excited – not in the sense that they are all extroverts, but rather that they burn with a desire to be effective. People with zeal have a positive attitude marked by a commitment to figure out how to get things done as opposed to a penchant for pointing out what can’t be done.
Hire people who are servant leaders. Servant leaders understand the concept of meeting others’ needs so that those others are free and unencumbered. They can then do their best work, enjoying both productivity and satisfaction. Servant leaders create environments in which people understand and believe that they are valuable, necessary and appreciated.
Hire people who are mission-driven. Mission-driven people place the big picture, the goal, the ends above their own immediate needs. Mission-driven people are those whom others call “team players.” They look not toward recognition and accolades, but toward meeting the needs of the customer. Mission-driven people understand that their own future is secured in the success of the whole.
Hire people who are respected. Respected people – not necessarily popular people – are those who make decisions based on what’s right, not what’s acceptable. Respected people are those with convictions and the courage and skill to live them out publicly. Respected people are always respectful people and wear well in the long haul even as they create some discomfort in the here and now.
Pay close attention to these four characteristics when your are hiring and assembling a team. Consider them carefully when you are going about the unpleasant task of laying people off. Use every opportunity to craft a team of respected and respectful servant leaders who are zealous about advancing your mission. Who are the right people for your team?
